“Your CD is just beautiful. The Shining Light is a powerful resource, the words and music nourish children’s minds and hearts. One of the nicest gifts a parent (or grandparent) can give a child.”

“It would be wonderful to see this CD in every home”.
Shining Light Review
By Karen Cooper, M.S., Licensed Mental Health Counselor
Children have always needed adult mentors and friends to help them grow into well adjusted and responsible adults. In recent years, the media and behavioral healthcare community's attention has been drawn to the alarming numbers of emotionally disturbed children and adolescents. Professionals have inquired into this trend through research, consultation groups, and formal training. One factor that has been determined to be involved in governing overall health and well being is that of emotional intelligence. Another factor that has been researched and published as contributing greatly in serious emotional disturbance amongst children and adolescents is a serious lack of affirmation for any part of the child's being.
The time has come for parents, educators, and all adults who are in relationship to children to be much more proactive in helping these wonderful little beings to listen to and affirm their innate wisdom, creativity, and inner resourcefulness. Lynne Cox is a mentor and counselor who has heard the call to help children. She has developed a beautiful CD that guides very young children on a magical exploration of their inner worlds using visualization, stories, and exercises to affirm and support a growing appreciation of Self. The words are set to soft, comforting music that invites all who listen to relax into a peaceful state of mind. Lynne's soft and gentle voice leads young children on an inner journey of exploration while they learn how to breathe, comfort themselves, dissolve stress, and appreciate their own unique qualities.
A Shining Light Lesson Plans which accompanies the Shining Light CD is designed to help educator and parents work together as they practice the exercises and creative visualizations presented in Lynne's stories. Teachers are able to take children through songs, art, and activities that affirm qualities of patience, positive self-regard, and sharing. Adults can support and affirm children's dreams, wishes, emotions, and individual experiences while teaching the activities outlined in each of the lesson plans. Positive relationship experiences grow between adults and children, and children with themselves, providing them with roots of nurturing and validation to promote a foundation of emotional intelligence and good feelings about Self.
Lynne's offering to young children and adults who are in relationship with them, is timely and sorely needed in this society. The Shining Light CD, Book and Lesson Plans for Parents and Teachers helps to promote the very qualities and positive self-regard that inoculates children against stress. We know that children who grow up experiencing validation and skills to self-soothe are better prepared to negotiate life's rocky moments; and they are much more likely to avoid drugs and other ways of becoming side tracked on their way to adulthood.

“I have been playing the Shining Light CD to my youngest daughter who is two. She was having a hard time staying in bed and also she has been getting up in the middle of the night and wanting to play. I have put the CD on for her and it has calmed her down and put her back to sleep. As for the daycare I have put it on at quiet time. This time of the day is not only important for the children but for me too as I have to have my cup of tea and sit down in the afternoon or else I burn out. Until I started using the CD nearly always I would have one of the children want something and I would have to get up. Now I put your Shining Light CD on and they relax and listen to it and it calms them down and they are rejuvenated when quiet time is over. I love the words, they are very meaningful and I think as we use it more they will get so much more out of it.”
Sheena Sharp, Family Education & Support Centre:
“I often play the Shining light CD as background music and stories for groups of children 0 to 6 yrs. of age. It creates a peaceful mood in the child minding room. The Shining Light Lesson Plans are well laid out and easy to follow. I believe that this program is helpful in raising a child’s self worth and confidence in a fun and natural way.”

“The Shining Light CD has had a tremendous impact on our daughter’s bedtime routine. She is an imaginative girl who thinks of things lurking in the dark. The CD has allowed her to relax and let go of her fears and give into the night while slipping beautifully into sleep. She is now able to settle her thoughts of anxiety and replace them with calm, loving thoughts. It has been a marvel to see the effect the soothing, calming, and positive impact the CD has had on her life.
She has memorized the words and it is comforting for her to say them. When I sit down with her at night, the Shining Light CD has significantly reduced the time before she falls asleep.
She is nine years old I thought the CD might be too young for her when I first listened to it. However, this is not true, it is just exactly what she needed. In fact my twelve year old son who is a real cool grade seven student listens to the CD when he finds he cannot sleep. Our daughter will be sleeping and he will sneak into her room, take the CD, slip it in to his system and listen to it.
As my husband and I listen to the Shining Light CD with our daughter, it relaxes us and sets a wonderful tone for the rest of our evening.
I will highly recommend the Shining Light CD. Every child would benefit tremendously by listening to it. I am so grateful that you have made it. It is a wonderful resource. It has been so fortuitous for our family and I want to thank you for it.”
Darrell:
“We have enjoyed listening to the Shining Light CD on and off for many months. The words and music are delightful, soothing and grounding, with a deeper purpose.
Tara:
“With a baby and three year old the evenings are the worst pressure point of the day. By the time we have back to back baths and I get the kids to bed I feel so stressed out. I sit down and we all listen to the Shining Light CD and it really works for us. My whole body relaxes! It is perfect for us. Yesterday my three year old started to say some of the words after hearing the CD only a few times.”
Travis likes it. He recognizes it whenever I turn it on and looks forward to the stories. I also look after my niece, she likes to scream especially when I am driving. I take it into the van with me so the children are clam and I can concentrate on my driving.
Carolyn:
“I put on the Shining Light CD for my two boys who are four and five years old. Their two friends aged three and six were visiting and I noticed that, as a group, they were calm and played more cooperatively while the CD was playing in the background.”
Beverly:
“When I played the Shining Light CD for the first time, I watched my children transform into a calmer, gentle and loving mood. With constant smiles on their faces they danced to the music. When calm, they laid still and watched imaginary figures in the sky. My daughter said to me “Mommy, I love this CD, may we play it when I wake up.” We play the CD often and I always look forward to the gentle loving nature of my daughters when it’s playing. “It is really a delightful CD” one I enjoy listening to as much as my children!”

“One day my seven year old son was extremely agitated, shaking and incapable of calming down. I put on the Shining Light CD and we listened for awhile. At first he didn’t want to but after a few of the stories, he softened up and cozied up into my arms. He was then relaxed and capable of talking about the situation. It was fantastic!”
Leslie:
First, I feel so honored to be able to be part of the Shining Light Program. Patience in dealing with the daily routine gets us, all of us, to be tired and challenged at this day and age where everything is fast-paced. Stopping to see the bees, the flowers blooming and feeling the rain drops become a luxury, much more ever noticing that after all, we are in fact still breathing and alive.
The Shining Light, primarily is designed to instill good values and nurturing techniques to children but I shall say, that the program is a mirror of how I see myself first as a person, then as a mother. I have to come face to face to ask and evaluate how I am doing as a parent, to my two beautiful kids. Yes, we do have moments but I will never trade them for anything in this world. “The Shining Light helps us get back to the basics. The happiness of just being with our little ones, kind of learning like them, seeing like them, feeling like them. Never letting us forget the time when we first held them in our arms. That excitement, sometimes, somehow, fades away as we get caught up in our “busy” world again, but the Shining Light takes us to the next level, witnessing the joy and excitement of giving knowledge to our kids firsthand, and leaving imprints on them that they will carry into the future. The Shining Light provides tools for cultivating the minds and hearts, even souls, of our own kids. Every effort, every element is simple, basic and warms our heart. If we could start with this kind of communicating with our self, our families and our communities, every one of us would never have to worry about going to bed at night. The warmth of a hug is most certainly reassuring.”
Everyone in our family appreciates and listens to the music. Our six year old daughter is a huge fan of the Shining Light CD and it is not unusual for her to listen to the Shining Light CD several times a day!
Lukas is still very young but has been listening to the Shining Light CD for several months. I play it for him during the day and it is very good to end the day with it, as it calms and relaxes him at sleep time.
“Erika is very active and it was a challenge to get her to sit down and listen to what I say. The Shining Light CD is a signal for calm, a transition time for both of us. We tend to argue less and don’t get disappointed as much. We haven’t been into sparks compared to six months or even two months ago. We are speaking with much more kindness to each other.”
“Erika is a very creative child and has an active imagination. She imagines and plays “pretend”. She’ll put on a show. She’ll say “I want to be a Ballet Dancer” and she’ll start dancing around the room reciting the words on the Shining Light CD. She is enjoying herself very much. I see this as a positive way for her to have fun and build confidence in herself.”
“Erika simply “loves” the Shining Light CD. She has listened to the CD so often that she knows every story and can recite almost every line as she plays the music. She is just learning to write and I have seen her write out the words and then read them back to herself. This is an excellent way for her to enhance her writing skills and experience positive messages as she reads and then writes the stories.”
Kelly:
“Most evenings I read Laurence a story and sometimes he’s still fooling around and not sleeping. He resists going to sleep, then I put on the Shining Light CD and it calms him down. We listen to it every night! Laurence frequently repeats the positive words on the Shining Light CD. He starts talking quiet – more soothing to me in a tiny little quiet voice. He really likes the Shining Star Story.
I feel very soothed and more hopeful at getting to points of calmness sooner with my son and myself. I found it very enjoyable to be reminded how fun it is to play with children. The bubble blowing was an awesome experience for some reason, to see how gentle, flowing and beautiful it can be to catch a bubble. The whole learning about breathing and to be able to teach my son how easy he can benefit himself is a real eye opener.
One of my goals or hopes was to never pass on my anger, impatience to my son so now I know we can grow in this area together with more laughter in the house most definitely. I loved making the Shining Light craft.
I love the positive words and feelings. I go to bed right after I listen to it. It brings tears to my eyes. I get so tearful and sometimes I go to bed feeling like a little girl inside. A lot is happening in my life and in my new situation and it’s going to be OK, I say to myself, I love myself – even when I don’t believe it. I really like the Shining Light CD. I will keep it for years to come.”
Sandra:
“I am a mother of two children, a five year old girl and an eight year old boy. I am a wife of a husband of twelve years.
As a family we have experienced and enjoyed listening to the Shining Light CD by Lynne Cox. It has filled our home with gentleness when we are busy doing stuff and when we are needing peace to come into our home.
I have read the stories and I have asked my daughter questions from the Shining Light Lesson Plans activity book. She loves to put on the CD and do her crafts. We chat about the words and she responds by usually wanting it to play the CD for longer.
Today I learned the simplicity of the exercises and how to have fun with my children. For two minutes of making bubbles I can connect with my child in a very loving way. I am excited about that.
For the last several months my husband has played and listened to the CD while he is doing his exercises. He lives with chronic pain that can cripple him for many days at a time. He turns to the soothing, relaxing words to help relieve his mind/body from the nagging pain.
I have played the CD in the night at bedtime for my son. He may have had a difficult day/evening or may have a hard time going to sleep. He also enjoys the calming voice and feels good when he hears the words. I love knowing that he is growing and taking in loving, encouraging messages. He so desperately needs that now.
I’ve learned how to “breathe” and what our breath can do. I was excited to talk and share this activity with my daughter. It was great to have the words, and understanding to openly and freely ask Isabel the questions. She responded well and we had a few conversations about breathing and our bodies (lungs, heart, muscles). We pretended to blow bubbles and balloons. We also went out a few days later and purchased more bubbles. That was fun to see how we did it all together. I was also able to talk with my son Thomas about how important it is for him. When we are upset to take a deep breathe. How it can calm us down, we feel more in control of our emotions. He was intrigued and open to the idea. I really believe that I am “getting it”.
It is all tremendous, I am growing, my children are seeing me change for the better, they are learning positive, healthy ways to live as well. Also my husband is willing to learn along with us so that we can all feel better. I am very pleased to have the tools from the Shining Light lessons to guide me along a brighter, positive path in life.
The Shining Light CD and Lesson Plans continue to encourage me to reach out in many ways that are positive to our children.
I am learning to talk with them, play with them, listen to them and encourage them in very simple enjoyable ways. I look forward to asking what each child enjoys and their favorite things. I know we will all have a terrific moment together and I look forward to starting the day off in a loving, positive, healthy way. I am so blessed to have this guide in our home. We live in very trying times, our family and any “Shining Light” into our some times darkness is so welcome.
Carrie:
“I’ve found that this Shining Light has been helpful because it gives me, as the mother of three boys, the opportunity to teach them to feel good about themselves as they grow older and to have confidence in themselves and their unique abilities, leading to them being confident in their day to day lives.
I’ve found that the breathing exercise in the Shining Light Lesson Plans can really calm down my kids. I tried this activity with my youngest son, who is three and we had an absolutely fun time blowing bubbles and catching them on our wands or on our hands. After blowing great big ones, we’d laugh out loud. I don’t often get to have this much fun with him, since at this time I only see him two days a week, because he lives in foster care right now, with his older brothers. So I really cherish any amount of time I have to spend time with him. During and after this time I was thinking that I couldn’t have asked for a better day with him, and I can’t imagine having more fun with him. I can’t wait to try more activities with him and his brother.
My five year old son Brendan has been diagnosed as being autistic. We tried the exercises with him and we were blowing up balloons and he had a great time paying attention to how he breathed in and then the outward breath could blow up the balloon. He absolutely loved it!
Brendan was having a temper tantrum. I remained calm and gently distracted him by blowing up balloons while encouraging Brendan to take in and out breaths. We talked about how his lungs were like the balloon. Brendan loved it so much we had a great time instead of an intensified temper tantrum.
Another time Brendan was also having a temper tantrum. He seemed frustrated because he couldn’t figure something out he was playing with. I had the Shining Light CD on at the time. I felt calm and went over to Brendan, took him by the hand and softly asked if he wanted to come and sit with me on the couch. We sat down on the couch together and I talked with him quietly. He got up when he was ready to carry on playing.”
Claire:
“Hannah is absolutely thrilled with the CD, especially the Sand Castle song.”
Donna:
“My 15 year old son says, “I am Lynne’s Number 1 fan, she has the voice of an angel. He went on and on but … I don’t think anyone is too old for your CD Lynne.”
Amber:
“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank-you for providing our child with music that is reaffirming her self-esteem and confidence levels. Our daughter, Asha, loves to listen to the self affirmations with ease and grace. You have made a positive difference in our lives, thanks for sharing your devotion with us.”
